Representation Matters
As we mourn Chadwick Boseman, we reflect on the body of work he gifted us over his short but impactful life, and why his departure was felt deeply by all of us. Though we may not have known him personally, we resonated with the stories he portrayed on screen. He modelled possibility and was intentional and committed to positive representation. #WakandaForever.
We aim to take a leaf from his book and ensure that we too champion and amplify representation of our community. This is why we are excited to support Ubuntu Project’s first ever virtual African Australian Careers Expo on September 12-13 for year 12 students to give them an inside scoop on what’s possible. We are well represented with African professionals from almost all industries giving insights on their own personal journey and career tips along the way!
We are also pleased to see representation in the political space with six members from the African community taking part in the upcoming local council elections. We wish them all the best as they embark on their political career journey. Hop onto a Zoom call with them on Saturday 12 September at 7pm to ask questions on what inspired them to take this journey!
However, as we seek to advocate for representation of our community, let us remember that we do not live in a vacuum, and that there are other communities around us that we interact with. We are encouraged by the buzz around our Bridge Film, which we released to the wider community last week, and we hope it continues to spark conversations on how we can be better allies for each other. Part 2 of the Bridge program is in the works, so watch this space!
