Incubate Hackathon

The first ever African Australian Socialpreneurship Hackathon supported by Monash University was a success beyond our expectation. Every individual and organisation we contacted to support us, said ‘yes’ without any reservation. It goes to show that a good idea will always have many supporters. We are now in our 2nd year running!

The Incubate Hackathon (Hack) is an intensive workshop that targets 18-25 year old African Australians to come together to learn how to transform an idea into a profitable business using current social issues impacting the African Australian community as a test subject. The Hack is designed to increase the participation of African Australians in solving social issues that affect them (such as unemployment, mental health etc.) and equip them with entrepreneurial skills to apply in new and/or existing business ventures. Participants acquire tools to successfully take their business ideas into a viable model using Design Thinking methodology and Business Model Canvas.

The Hack addresses the barriers to participation for African Australians looking to start their own business, find alternative options for employment and build business skills. It also reduces social isolation whilst also developing soft skills and promotes social and economic participation with the Australian startup ecosystem.

We are happy to report that the Scholarship recipient, our second runner up have now launched their business a human resource business specialising in diverse talent; DivTal. See their story here.
