The Bridge Program is a two-year program that connects people of African Heritage to other multicultural communities to elevate intercultural engagement, understanding and respect.

In our first year (2019), we ran a series of workshops to build bridges within ourselves, intergenerational family members, other multicultural communities and with First Nation People.

These efforts resulted in 50 participants from African, Asian and Pasifika communities engaged in:

  • Conversations to share each other’s cultures, beliefs and experiences to highlight shared purpose and minimise negative stereotypes and beliefs.

  • Immersion into African, African American and Afro-Caribbean diaspora cultures by attending two multicultural galas.

  • Filming a short documentary about their personal journeys to understand culture in their day-to-day lives.

For Bridge Program 2021, we're developing a toolkit for multicultural communities to become allies and work respectfully with First Nations People. Our focus was informed by:

  • Feedback from the popularly attended Bridging the gap with First Nations People workshop requesting more cultural competency and immersion workshops.

  • The upcoming Victorian Government Indigenous Treaty.

  • The current need for allies to support and amplify Indigenous and Black voices in their quest for justice and equality.

  • The desire to provide allies with the knowledge and resources to inform their activism.

It was very intimate space to explore and feel connected. The presenter did an amazing job at giving a presentation on [the different] generations and helping us explore ourselves deeper!
